When does the speed limit posted on a sign come into affect?
It doesn’t matter where you ‘see’ the sign as eyesight differs for various people. And it would be impossible to prove in court at what point someone ‘should’ have been able to see the sign. The posted limit IS in effect at the location of the sign. That’s why you want to slow down a little before the sign, because technically a cop can stop you for speeding if you’re over the limit even a few inches past the sign. Most cops have much more to do than wait for somebody to be doing 1 mph over the limit exactly at a speed limit sign. There are a very rare few that don’t, and those usually earn the Barney Fife distinction, usually in jurisdictions that are just about that size, too.
