When Does Spring Start?
It would seem obvious that for Christians springtime revolves around the three days between Good Friday and Easter. The cold dark force of Winter is overcome and Spring blossoms forth. This is not as simple as it seems. Good Friday was celebrated by Jesus Christ as Passover and just happened to be on Friday that year. He died on the 15th day of Nissan, which in the Jewish calendar is automatically the Full Moon. All four Gospels say that he died on Friday. One of many possible dates for this is the 3rd of April in the year 33 CE, when it is known there was a partial lunar eclipse. Easter was mandated to be on Sunday by the Council of Nicæa in 325 CE, effectively making it not just a sun- and moon-based holiday, but since it revolves around the days of the week, also a human-based holiday. The simple definition of Easter is that it is the first Sunday after the Full Moon that occurs on or after the Vernal Equinox. If the Full Moon falls on a Sunday then Easter is the next Sunday. The official start of spring (March 21) is called the vernal (spring) equinox and is dictated by the earth’s orbit around the sun… We’ve passed the point where the north pole is now tilted in the direction of the sun instaed of away from it. We are having spring-like weather earlier each year due to the warming trend the earth is currently experiencing, some people call it ‘global warming’. It doesn’t really mean spring starts any sooner in celestial terms.
If we consent to the definition that spring starts on the day of best vernal equinox, that is when the center of the sun in on the plane of equator of the earth, then it’s hard to believe that global warming can change that. At any rate, you can verify that yourself by marking the highest exactly north, or the lowest exactly south, angle of the shade of a string-hung mass around noon local time. On the day that that angle equals your exact local lattidue, your spring technically starts.
With regards spring time starting,then i think that is more down to the gardeners and farmers who will be able to tell you.but British summer time begins at 2am on the last sunday in march and winter time starts on the last sunday in october at 2am.a lot of people get confused which one goes forward a hour and which goes back a hour.it is pretty easy to remember if you take SPRING (march) as it says spring forward,and as the americans call autumn FALL,so there for the october time falls back a hour. SPRING = forward a hour. FALL = back a hour. hope this helps.
