At the end of the Guyuana Highlands arc (episode 24), the Neo-Japanese officials send the God Gundam down to the highlands, concerned that the Shining was destroyed in the conflict with the Devil Gundam there. While the Shining survived that, it was destroyed by the Master Gundam as Domon used it for a shield while rushing to the God’s drop ship. The Shining’s cockpit and core lander were completely destroyed, the Master Gundam’s arm impaling it. Many believe that the God was allowed to replace the Shining at the finals because it could not function without the data from Shining. (The God was created specifically for use in the finals.
