When do you think women really started to get into Asian guys in American culture?
The trend likely started a couple years ago. When the traditional media and Hollywood started to lose audiences and therefore influences on people. The rise of digital media — the Internet and online social networking — began to replace the traditional media as the preferred mode of leisure and entertainment. The traditional media and Hollywood have always been the biggest culprits in demeaning and degrading Asian men and Asian cultures; I am very glad that their influences have finally waned. I certainly hope their decline will continue. The recent proliferation of YouTube videos and online forum postings of white girls, black girls and Latinas proclaiming their preference for Asian men, showing off their Asian boyfriends/husbands, and asking questions like “how can I get an Asian boyfriend??” must have also contributed to this new trend.
