When do Retaining Walls Require Permits and Engineering?
Retaining Wall Requirements ALL RETAINING WALLS REQUIRE PERMITS Masonry, Concrete, or Premanufactured Stacked Block Type Retaining Walls: • Engineering is required on retaining walls when: • Walls are subject to hydrostatic pressure from groundwater; or • Walls are supporting more than 48″ of unbalanced backfill; or • The premanufactured block manufacturer requires it for the specific site conditions.
