When do racoons abandon baby racoons?
She might be trying to wean the babies. It doesn’t sound like she is trying to abandon them. Just that she wants to be away from them for a while, either to feed or be alone. If they are old enough to run and scream after her, then they aren’t in danger of dying from being alone. Keep an eye on them. If the mother doesn’t come back for them within 48 hours, and they look in danger, call a wildlife rehabilitation center. Dont call animal control or your shelter, as they might think they are nuisance animals and euthanize them. But it sounds like everything is normal. They are just getting older, and the mother is trying to make them more independent. Good luck!
