When do I add Live Sand to Tank?
The way I added it to my tank was: 1. Fill the tank with perhaps an inch of premixed seawater. 2. Add the live sand and make sure it is spread evenly. 3. Place a clean plate on top of the live sand and pour water onto the plate to reduce silt. Fill the tank halfway full. Remove the plate 4. Add the live rock. Wiggle the base pieces down into the sand until they are sitting on the glass. Arrange the rest of the live rock in the desired landscape. 5. Fill the rest of the tank. Live sand will contain more than just bacteria. I am constantly seeing little arthropods burrowing through my sandbed up against the glass. These arthropods and their eggs will provide a source of food for both fish and corals. If you do choose to place the rock first for stability, just fill the tank about 1/4 full of water and then add the sand around the edges. You will also need to buy a new turkey baster (the squirting kind) to blast the sand off the rock. The turkey baster will be a good investment regardless
