Blue-green algae blooms occur when conditions are favorable to support optimal growth. Blooms typically occur from mid-summer to early fall, when air and water temperatures are warmest, daylight hours are long, water levels and flows are low and urban, agricultural and industrial activities are at their peak. Blooms can occur during winter under ice, but this is rare.
