When did Toyota start thinking about drag racing?
Amstock: With the weakening and uncertainty of Indy-style cars in the last part of 2001 we began exploring other options. I think we had received about five or six really solid packages from NHRA teams over time. Of those, I would say three came from top teams that really captured our interest. NHRA.com: Ultimately, how did you decide on Alan Johnson’s team? Amstock: We went through a very exhaustive approach to picking a team. We know that this is our first exposure to these potential customers so we wanted to align ourselves with a group we thought fit best for us. Obviously, Alan Johnson’s entire Foxen Canyon operation is top-notch. We looked at who would be our spokespersons and I don’t know if you could find more of a class act then Gary Scelzi. He’s a proven winner, a three-time champ, he’s well spoken and mature and I really think he has a way about him that people love.
