When did TMI Unit 1 begin operating?
Three Mile Island Unit 1 began commercial service in 1974 and is licensed to operate until 2034. The NRC approved TMI Unit 1’s request for a 20-year extension to its original operating license, set to expire in 2014, on Oct. 22, 2009. From 2005 through 2009, approximately $500 million has been invested into plant equipment to ensure continued safe operations and to ensure essential electricity is supplied to the region.
