The war in Afghanistan began in late September-early October 2001 when CIA agents arrived to begin coordinating and funding Northern Alliance efforts against the Taliban. Small numbers of US Special Operations Forces also entered Afghanistan, mainly to help identify and designate targets for air strikes. I’m not sure about bombing prior to October 7th–it’s been a while since I read the book (“First In”).
