It seems they entered the war several times. In 1939 they were fighting against Japan in Mongolia, then invaded eastern Poland to keep Germany from taking the whole country. Then they occupied Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. In November the Soviet Union attacked Finland. Throughout 1939 and 1940 they supported Germany’s efforts against Eastern Europe. They became one of the Allied Nations after Hitler launched an attack on them in 1941.
