Tuesday, 12 October, 1943 The Allied Air Force began a major air offensive against Rabaul on New Britain Island in the Bismarck Archipelago with the aim of isolating and neutralizing it. Almost 350 B-24’s, B-25’s, P-38’s, and RAAF airplanes pound the town, harbor, and airfields in the area; over 50 Japanese aircraft are destroyed, 3 ships are sunk and several damaged, and several small harbor craft are sunk.
