Art existed throughout the medieval period. Wonderful illuminated manuscripts were produced from the earliest medieval period, like the fantastic Book of Kells, which was produced in about 800 A.D, as was the Harley golden Gospels, produced under Charlemagne. Fabulous mosaics were created in the Byzantine empire. Beautiful frescoes were painted on the walls of churches, some of which still survive. The Bayeux Tapestry, made to celebrate William the Conqeurer’s conquest of england in 1066, is an emboridered picture that is a major work of art. The Gothic style in art began with the fantastic church architecture of the 12th century, at the height of the middle Ages. The gothic style showed an increased naturalism in the styles of 13th century artists like Duccio and Giotto and cimabue.

A sort of short art history. Roman art 500bc-400AD (circa) Early Christian art, a development of the catacomb art, starts to be used in the early churches. Earliest comes from 2nd century to around 350AD. A development of this art is the Byzantine art. Mauseleum of Galla Placidia in Ravenna one of the earliest forms of this art. Still in use today, in Greek/Russian Orthodox art. Same principals apply, making it one of the longst existing art forms today.
