When did illegitimate children stop taking their influential fathers surnames?

Most probably when formal registration of births was introduced,I haven’t looked into when this happened. As far as I know to this day a fathers name can only be put on the register if he is married to the mother or in the case of an illegitimate birth,he accompanies the mother and agrees to be named.
