Cassius Clay changed his name to Muhammad Ali after joining the Nation of Islam in 1964. Muhammad Ali was born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr. on January 17, 1942 in Louisville, Kentucky. As an amateur, he won a gold medal in the light heavyweight division at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome. Also as an amateur he won six Kentucky Golden Gloves titles, two national Golden Gloves titles, an Amateur Athletic Union National Title. He turned professional after the Olympics and on February 25, 1964 he defeated Sonny Liston in Miami, Florida to take the heavyweight title. After winning the championship, Clay announced that he was a member of the Nation of Islam and the Nation gave Clay the name Cassius X, discarding his surname as a symbol of his ancestors’ enslavement, as had been done by other Nation members.
