Antonin Scalia was nominated by Ronald Reagan and assumed office on September 26, 1986. He was preceded by William H. Rehnquist. He is the second most senior Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States and is considered to be a core member of the conservative wing of the court. Justice Scalia is a vigorous proponent of textualism in statutory interpretation and originalism in constitutional interpretation, and a passionate critic of the idea of a Living Constitution. Anonin Scalia was born in 1936. He married and later had nine children. He received an A.B. from Georgetown, an LL.B. from Harvard Law, and was a Sheldon Fellow of Harvard University from 1960-1961. He went on to become a Law Professor at the University of Virginia, University of Chicago, and a visiting Law Professor at Georgetown and Stanford. From 1981-1982 Scalia was Chairman of the American Bar Association’s Section of Administrative Law. President Reagan appointed Scalia to the U.S. Court of Appeals for Washington D.C. in 1982. In 1986, President Reagan promoted William H. Rehnquist to chief justice after the retirement of Warren Burger. To fill the vacancy created by Rehnquist’s promotion, Reagan nominated Scalia to the Supreme Court. On September 25, 1986, Scalia took the oaths of office, becoming the youngest justice on the United States Supreme Court.
