When did Afghanistan attack the USA I forget?
Afghanistan did not “attack” the U.S. in the literal sense of the word. However, it was discovered that the ruling Taliban was protecting, sheltering Osama Bin Laden after the 9/11 attacks. The Bush Administration gave fair warning that the Taliban could either give up Bin Laden, or face the same fate he would face which would include being invaded and losing control of the country. The Taliban was given a clear chance to be a part of the solution and instead they supported the terrorism brought about by Bin Laden and chose to continue to support and shelter him from U.S. prosecution. Again, quite fairly, the Bush Administration treated the Taliban as though they were an active supporter of Bin Laden’s agenda and attacked Afghanistan. This was totally justifiable.
Sept 11, 2001, as elements supported by the then Taliban-lead government of Afghanistan brought down the World Trade Center partially destroyed the Pentagon and probably were zeroing in on the White House or Congress when the passengers of the 4th aircraft retook control of the cockpit resulting in its crashing in rural Pennsylvania. Bush did few things right in his 8 years in office. One that he failed miserably at was staying on top of al qaeda, a known legitimate threat. He did start to recuse himself when he properly went after them in Afghanistan. Unfortunately it did not take him long to lose sight of the original objective and go after a tin-pot dictator that had not attacked the US and was little credible threat to the US or her interests. As a result, al qaeda and bin laden remain free to this day and the Taliban threat has spread to Pakistan, a NUCLEAR nation.
