He wants to create a Voltaic battery. It’s completely safe and it’s a great project for him. The electron charge in the pickle is the same whether he’s eating it or plugging a light bulb into it. My kids have done the same project using potatoes and oranges. The project is completely appropriate and I think you need to let him and his Science teacher work it out. Remember that as much as we want our kids to succeed, we already passed the 5th grade and now it’s his turn. Just let him do the project and you’ll be amazed at how bright your child is all by himself. It’s a lesson I still have to work on with my husband. Between us we have 9 kids. Amazingly, they do mighty well without parents micromanaging.
