When counting the number of rooms in my home, why don’t I need to include bathrooms and hallways? Are connected spaces counted as separate rooms?

Duke Energy estimates the size of a home based on the major rooms only. The smaller areas are taken into account, but are simply averaged into the larger room sizes.
