What should you NOT do? De-claw the cat. Any type of negative reinfiorcement like that for behaviour that is merely a cat being a cat is the wrongest thing you can do. It’s a cat and will behave like a cat, it;s up to you, if you are keeping your cat indoors, to give your cat an appropriate place to BE a cat. It;s not a stuffed toy. Maybe do some reading up on why cats scratch and you’ll see how important scratching (and claws) are to your cat. Please never declaw. You can always begin by cutting the tips of the claws themselves – and that’s the only cutting near the claws one needs to do. At best, only use positive reinforcement. No negative, only praising the good. There’s a few things you can try. If your cat needs a bit more help than only positive reinforcement, depending on how your cat reacts to water, you can try spritz him or her with a bit of water. With some cats, that’s all it takes.
