Simply, due to a flaw in VideoForWindows compatibility layer with DirectShow, sometimes you dont get the overlay window working. Please, use Preview instead of overlay. The chipset cant support Overlay mode and capturing video simultaneously unless both are at the same resolution and colordepth – space, or both are set to provide images of less than half the maximum height allowable for the current analog video standard. Theres a simple reason: One of the video fields can be used for preview, and the other can be used to be captured. If you set the size of the image to be captured to be more than half the maximum height, both fields are required to be captured to achieve that size, so no field is available to get preview with it.
