Rule 1 of hamstring injuries: just because it feels better doesn’t mean it is well enough to sprint. Many people try to return as soon as it feels better, then they injure it worse. Generally speaking it takes about 2 weeks to a month to recover from a hamstring strain. A severe strain in a high level sprinter may shut them down for months. Recovery is often sport specific. A football lineman can return to effective play sooner than a wide receiver. You treat the initial injury with ice and gentle stretching. Then focus of your flexibility and hamstring strengthening. Strengthen by doing multiple reps – not heavy weight with low reps. (leg curls, rdl’s, single leg squats for control) Think of your hamstrings as the opposition for your quads – the way brakes slow down a car. Your quads are a powerful muscle group – your hamstrings have to be able to counteract them. You have a good chance of being ready for camp, but do not keep trying to test it.
