It varies from person to person. Some people will be able to remove te bar after a day or two, other people will heal the hole even after years if the bar is removed for even a few minutes. If it hurts at all or the flesh is at all different to the surrounding tissue then the piercing has not fully healed yet. I had my tongue pierced in December 08 and I have not removed the bar in case it heals over.
