When can I begin organising a funeral?
The extent of the bushfires means the DVI investigation may continue for many months. The State Coroner is acutely aware that every day is an agonising wait for families. In some cases, it may be many months before some people who died in the fires are identified and returned to their families. A structured, systematic approach must be undertaken to avoid mis-identification and the further trauma this would inflict on families. You may wish to hold a service or ceremony before the identification process is complete and family members are returned to you. This is an individual decision for each family.
