The most common situations that require static IP addresses include: 1) If you are going to be hosting your own e-mail, web or other type of server, 2) If you have a dedicated firewall, 3) If you are going to implement a VPN to enable secure connections with other sites on the Internet, or 4) If any of the applications you are using over the Internet require static IP addressing to function properly.
