As it is a spectrum disorder those at the less affected end ( Aspergers etc) do indeed ‘intellectualise’ stuff as they mature. Of course they don’t ‘recover’ they learn to accommodate it. As an example in childhood an affected child would maybe say rude and inappropriate things to strangers such as ‘ you smell funny’. After time and learning from peoples reactions they know saying stuff like that isn’t acceptable. Most of us would discern this intuitively as a child by reading facial expressions and noting voice tone etc. An austiic child wouldn’t pick up those clues but that doesn’t mean they can’t ‘learn’ the rules, they can, just the road to that point is longer and harder. Science reporting unless done by actual scientists who are experts in their field can pretty much be taken with a pinch of salt. I think Autism has to be one of the most poorly reported conditions ever.
