When are EMG and NCV studies necessary?
An EMG is ordered when patients have symptoms such as muscle weakness, stiffness, or atrophy. This test is often used to diagnose disorders affecting muscles and/or nerves as listed above, including NCV EMG testing. The NCV is used to help make a diagnosis when the primary symptoms involve sensations such as pain, tingling, and numbness. The nerve conduction study consists of the following components: • Motor and Sensory nerves conduction velocity studies • F-wave and H-reflex studies Nerve conduction studies are used mainly for evaluation of paresthesias (numbness, tingling, burning) and/or weakness of the arms and legs. The type of study required is dependent, in part, upon your symptoms. Dr. Gregory B. Kirkorowicz is a seasoned neurologist in the EMG NCV testing.
