When are detritivores useful?
Detritivores are only useful as livestock food if you have livestock (eg carp, poultry, pigs) who can eat them (or you can trade them with someone who does), and one of the following conditions is met: • The detritivore can eat something that the livestock can not eat. For example: • Manure: But it is not recommended to feed these back to the same species of animal that produced the manure, although this is probably much safer with soldier grubs than with redworms because redworms are known to be intermediate hosts to many severe parasitic worms while soldier grubs are not known to be an intermediate host to any parasite. • Paper, leaves (high-carbon brown “green” wastes): Redworms supposedly eat like 80% paper (high-carbon) and 20% kitchen wastes. • The detritivore converts its food to something better for livestock.
