When animals are put to sleep how does the injection actually work? How does it kill them?

When my cat was put to sleep the vet gave him an injection of something like valium, so he was completely spaced out. Once that had taken effect she gave him something called Euthatal which is a barbiturate, and it stopped his heart in a matter of seconds. He didn’t know anything about it because he was so spaced out from the first injection.
