The Burj Dubai is hardly a new phenomenon (the world has known it would be the tallest man-made structure ever back in 2004 when construction first began), but today marks its official opening. The skyscraper — located in downtown Dubai in the United Arab Emirates — stands at an astounding 2,684 feet. To put that in perspective, New York’s Empire State Building is only 1,454 feet, the Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower) in Chicago — the tallest building in the United States — is 1,450 feet and the Taipei 101 — the previous record holder — is roughly 2,650 feet. The project is simultaneously awe-inspiring, ridiculous, thrilling, dangerous and ostentatious, but that’s the beauty of engineering. The 828-metre glass and metal structure called The Burj Khalifa opened its doors Monday, formally taking the title of the world’s tallest building, standing more than 300 metres higher than its next skyscraper rival, Taipei 101 in Taiwan. And it beats out the CN Tower, which stands 555-metres tall. Aside from owning the world’s tallest building title, the Burj Khalifa also hosts the world’s highest occupied floor and it has the highest observation deck, as well – on the 124th floor. UPI: Dubai in the United Arab Emirates is going ahead with plans to open the world’s tallest building in the midst of a recession and property crash, officials said. At more than 2,600 feet, the Burj Dubai (Dubai Tower) is twice as tall as the Empire State Building and its top can be seen from 60 miles away, the BBC reported Sunday.
