Be the first to welcome the Tall Ships to Boston! See both the ships at anchor as well as underway as they head into Boston Harbor. On July 8th, the large Class A Tall Ships will be entering the harbor, albeit in staggered fashion, and some will elect to raise their sails! It is expected that these most glorious ships will be entering at a rate of one per hour, BUT, Bay State Cruises vessel, the Provincetown II, has the speed and Coast Guard license required to go to the Tall Ships’ anchorage in Broad Sound, outside Boston Harbor. At the anchorage, guests will take in views of ALL the Class A vessels that are at anchor or underway, between 10:00am and 1:00pm. Come aboard the Provincetown II for a fabulous casual buffet lunch cruise to see these majestic vessels underway in the Harbor. The Provincetown II is the largest vessel in the harbor with the most amount of viewing and rail space of any vessel in New England. Our expert narration will top off this great day on the water. Member agencies of the 2009 Sail Boston Executive Steering Committee are completing final preparations as Boston gears up to welcome back Tall Ships for the first time since 2000. Boston is an official port call of the Tall Ships Atlantic Challenge, a five-leg race and cruise in which many of the expected Tall Ships are participating. Those ships will be sailing from Charleston, S.C., and arriving in Broad Sound outside Boston Harbor between Monday, July 6 and Wednesday, July 8. The public will have opportunities to view the vessels from the pier, and tour some of the ships between Thursday, July 9 and Sunday, July 12 at Charlestown Navy Yard, the Seaport World Trade Center, and the Fish Pier. Although vessels will be moored in other areas, including Rowes Wharf, Fan Pier, the Moakley Courthouse, and Battery Wharf, they will not be open for the public to board. A formal Parade of Sail will not be held, but instead, the Tall Ships will arrive independently with no set schedule. For more

The public will be invited to view about 40 Tall Ships in Boston Harbor and Winthrop at next week’s Sail Boston 2009 and to board ships from piers in South Boston and Charlestown, the Coast Guard announced yesterday. Seven Tall Ships will be moored at Seaport World Trade Center and the Fish Pier in South Boston, where spectators can visit between 5 and 10 p.m. Thursday and Friday and from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Tours will be offered when the ships are not otherwise booked for private parties. Spectators can also view the ships from their own boats or from commercial vessels that can travel the Seaport waterway between 8 a.m. and 11 p.m. Another seven ships will be moored at Charlestown Navy Yard, where spectators can visit the piers between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Thursday through Sunday and board at the discretion of the captain.
