Wisconsin Rapids Daily Tribune Methodist Church marks 150 years in community WISCONSIN RAPIDS — The United Methodist Church, 441 Garfield St., is celebrating its 150th year of serving the Wisconsin Rapids area. There will be an All Church Conference meeting at 10:15 a.m. Sunday followed by a celebratory dinner in Witter Hall at 11:30 a.m. The first Methodist effort in this area came about before Wisconsin was a state and before the conference of the Methodist Church was organized. At the Rock River Conference in Peoria, Ill., in 1845, the Rev. J.S. Hurlbut was appointed to the Wisconsin River Mission. The Wisconsin Annual Conference was organized in 1848, but did not send a regular pastor into this area until 1857 when the Rev. L.D. Tracey was appointed to Grand Rapids. This first organized church was incorporated Nov. 29, 1859. The first church building was at 410 Oak St. and was constructed in 1868.
