When and where does the krewe of barkus parade take place?
The 2009 Barkus Parade was Sunday, February 15, 2009 in New Orleans. It began at 2 PM in Armstrong Park. The parade winds for 15 blocks (about 1 mile) through the French Quarter and ends back at Armstrong Park. First held in 1993, the Barkus Parade is a Mardi Gras parade focusing on dogs. Owners dress their dogs in Mardi Gras style costumes and march through the city’s French Quarter. The event is organized by the Mystic Krewe of Barkus. This year’s theme was BatMutt – like Bat Man, the super hero – and many people dressed their dogs like the Bark Knight (get it?). Proceeds from the entrance fees and sale of merchandise benefit organizations that rescue dogs. This years king and queen of the parade were dogs rescued after Hurricane Katrina. Parade route: The parade starts at Armstrong Park. It goes southeast on St. Ann Street, northeast on Dauphine Street, southeast on Dumaine Street, southwest on Royal Street, southeast on St. Ann Street, southwest on Chartres Street, northwest on St.
