When and where did Archimedes born , and die?
Archimedes was born in 287 BCE in Syracuse, Sicily and died in 212 BCE (time goes ‘backwards in the BCE). He was killed in the Siege of Syracuse by a Roman Soldier, even though the soldiers orders were to not harm him and bring him back alive. Much of his mathematical accomplishments are not known due to the burning of the library of Alexandria, but his better known mathematical works include the “method of exhaustion” to solve the arc for a porabola, which requires forming of a proof by contradicion. He also accurately figured out the value of “pi.” scientifically, he is believed to have created the first calculator known as the “Antikythera Mechanism” which was capable of calculating date, time, month, and the positioning of the planets at any given time. Also, he is known for creating the archimedes screw that transports water uphill. this was used so a person did not have to keep refilling their water clocks!
