When and how was the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. built?

It was dedicated on November 13, 1982. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, founded by Jan C. Scruggs, started the project in 1979, and work began at the site on March 26, 1982. In just three and a half years, Scruggs and many other veterans and supporters worked to convince Congress to give a three acre plot of land on the prestigious National Mall for a memorial dedicated to honoring those servicemembers who served in Vietnam. The Memorial Fund raised the necessary funds and also coordinated a celebration called “The National Salute to Vietnam Veterans Week” at the 1982 dedication.
