When and how did the civil war end?
The civil war ended on April 9th 1865 at Appomattox, Virginia . After the fall of Richmond on April 3rd, Lee’s men lost the will to fight, so the two exchanged letters on the terms of surrender. ( short version) Although African American soldiers fought in the Civil war right up to it’s end, They were not called Buffalo soldiers at that time. Regiments of African American soldiers were formed on Sept 21 1866 and served until it was disbanded in 1944. They served mostly in time of peace except with their fights with the Indians. Nobody knows for sure where the name ” Buffalo Soldier” came from but it was just a nickname. Many believe it was given to them by the plains Indians for the similarity between their hair and Buffalo fur.
