When adding an article is it possible to add embedded images as well as plain text?
No. Optimally, you should use incremental reading tools which are based on rich text components that cannot embed images. Alternatively you could use HTML components but that will deprive you of extract and cloze tools. To add images to incremental reading, paste them to the element in question (i.e. not to the text component).
