When abortion became legal in 1973 what did that do to the maternal morbidity and mortality rate in the U.S.?
In the State of New York when abortion became legal in the early 70’s there immediately was a reduction in the maternal mortality rate by 50% the first year that continued to decrease yearly thereafter. The same occurred all over the country with abortion becoming legal in the U.S. by the Roe v Wade decision in 1973. Abortion clinics were open and Physicians with the expertise and experience with clean and sterile facilities were able to continue to improve their complication rates as the years have gone by such that abortions are one of the safest surgical procedures performed in the United States at this time.
