From state to state but here in Hawaii we are only allowed to give out length of employment, usually start date and last date worked. Pay scale. Reason for termination, if terminated and lastly would you consider this person for rehire. When I lived in the deep south, Mississippi, it was the same information. I had a person call once to check on an employee that had been terminated. We had strong suspicions that this person was stealling cah from the petty cash box but could not prove it. This person was also rude, undependable and swore like a sailor. Although I wanted to release this information, legally I could not. I did however state we would not rehire this person. Of course that doesn’t mean that some loose lipped person on the other end of ther phone might volunteer more information then they should.
