When a dog is on heat how long does she bleed for?
Seasons normally last for 21 days. For the first 10 days or so you will see a red, blood, discharge which gradually pales to a light straw colour, and decreases somewhat in amount. Bitches will normally stand (accept a male) from around days 10 through 13. This is the norm – some bitches will stand earlier, and others later. After this time, they won’t accept a male any more, and during the final week, their discharge normally lessens significantly, until by around day 21, it ends. Some bitches will bleed into the third week however – they don’t all go by the book. Just be with her for the full 21 days, and give it a day or two beyond, to make sure she’s out of season – although she’ll probably see off any male that is hanging around by the end of her season, in no uncertain terms. Don’t allow her out in the garden on her own, and you’d be wise to either keep her on a lead, even out there, or at least have one with you, just in case.
