Making PLA plastic from corn or sugarcane results in an ever-growing demand for valuable farmland and fresh water to produce it. If all of the plastic disposable items used in the world every year were made from PLA, it would take one hundred million tons of corn to make it. That represents at least 10% of the world’s grain supply, significantly impacting world hunger.
