Whats Wrong with Penske South?
The biggest disappointment of the 2006 season is the performance of the two Nextel Cup teams fielded by Penske South Racing. Kurt Busch is a past champion and Ryan Newman is a multi-time winner of races at this level. The last two seasons Newman finished 6th or 7th in the Nextel Cup standings. This season he is mired in 18th place! Kurt Busch has not done much better running 15th with two races to go. Kurt Busch has been won three or more races each of the last four years but only once in 2006. Newman’s season has been even worse with only seven top ten finishes after four seasons in a row of fourteen or more top tens. Both teams have strong Crew Chiefs but poor results. So what is wrong at Penske South? This week Matt Borland, Crew Chief for Ryan Newman, was rumored to be headed to Toyota next season and was dismissed before heading to Phoenix this week.
