First, don’t listen to Doane, cause he doane know nothing. AMCs are great, Jeep or otherwise. I have 2 faithful 65 & 66 Rambler Classics. They never let me down I drive them daily for work in the mountains of central Mexico. I had a 76 CJ7 that I drove from Chicago to central Mexico through hours of mountains in 3 days that had no problems on the road even though the main bearings were worn down to the bronze! Anyway….your problem. Hard to diagnose w/o being there, but here’s another possibility. The catalytic converter could be plugged and not allowing good air flow. This would only be realized now that you have repaired the exhaust system and have no leaks as an alternate escape route. I don’t know exactly where the system was repaired, so I can’t rule the possibility in or out. My guess is that you had the “donut” between the exhaust manifold and the header pipe replaced as those always go bad. In addition there is a heat riser flap inside your exhaust manifold that sometimes gets
