Whats wrong about genetically modified crops?
I generally agree with what you’re saying. I think genetic modification in the lab has potential to solve a lot of social and humanitarian problems. I think the concerns that people have (thoughtful people, scientists and non scientists alike) involve a few issues that have been totally co-opted by cause-hungry progressives and radicals. For one, to what extent should genetic modification be protected by intellectual property laws? Can you patent a gene that exists in nature by simply expressing it in a different organism? On an ecological level, there is some concern that pesticide genes (Bt being the most famous), could be spread to natural populations by hybridization between crops and their wild relatives. These are two examples of things that need to be discussed. The problem is that many alarmists get ahold of a few academic papers and let their imagination run totally wild.
