Whats with the name Westerly?

My grandmother’s sister had a vacation house on the east coast somewhere which came to be called Easterly. Being a Navy family, it was clear that any vacation house on the west coast would be named Westerly. When the cabin was built, Aunt Jean and Uncle George gave my grandparents the wood panel over the kitchen sink that says Westerly. There was a matching one at Easterly, though I don’t think that house is in the family anymore. The engraved wood panels are like the kind you find on the bridge of a ship, by the way. Later, my grandmother needle pointed the belt over the door to the upstairs bedroom. It has signal flags spelling out Westerly. The barometer also keeps with the nautical theme, though (thankfully) that’s pretty much the end of it. No, the windows in the shower are not shaped like portholes or anything. I used to call it “the cabin”, or “my grandparent’s cabin”, but that’s both too confusing and too long. Presumeably, this is why they came up with a name for it all those
