Whats with the MLB Player Comparisons?
The purpose of having MLB player comps is so when the average fan clicks on the player’s page, that fan should get a general idea of what kind of player that prospect could become. Only the top 20 or so prospects will have player comps, because most organizations don’t have 20 players that project to play in the majors over the long haul. The comp generally plays the same position as the player. The comp generally bats/throws with the same hand as the player. The comp is generally an MLB player that everyday fans have heard of. The player may not always project to be as good as his comp (for example, Lars Anderson and Justin Morneau are very similar players style-wise, but Lars Anderson doesn’t project to be an MVP just yet). Sometimes its just a frame of reference. The comp generally has the same build as the current player. Obviously comps are never perfect. Its actually a very difficult exercise. We try to follow as many of the guidelines as possible, but its not going to be perfect
