Although there are wide tolerances in all of these, odour problems usually indicate some sort of imbalance (probably too little carbon for the amount of nitrogen). First aid for smelly compost often means adding some brown material, mixing in some healthy garden soil, aerating the pile, then topping off with a brown layer. A well-functioning compost pile should not give off unpleasant odours.
