WHATS WITH ALL THE VIDEO GAME CRAP AND SWORD-FIGHTING I SAW IN THE TRAILERS?
Here’s where things get strange. See, in the Scott Pilgrim universe, there’s a nearly-constant stream of video game references and pop culture minutiae on display. At one point, Scott plucks a “1UP” heart out of thin air. In another example, whenever Scott defeats one of the evil exes, the villain instantly turns into a shower of gold coins. This is just the style that O’Malley chose for the books, and it’s something that Wright wanted to keep for the movie. As you’ve seen in the trailers, this has created some pretty nifty-looking sequences. The video game references are probably going to be the biggest hurdle for the film, though, as some may be too “geeky” for the cool kids. Whatever: we think they kick ass, especially the pixelated Universal logo accompanied by MIDI music that reportedly opens the film. As for all the sword-fighting, what can I tell you? Scott acquires a special sword at one point in the comics, but it remains to be seen if they kept that plot point for the movie.
