Whats this about renaming Wrigley Field?
Unfortunately, Wrigley Field CAN have a new name. The new owner of the Tribune Company (who in turn owns the Cubs) Sam Zell is your prototypical money obsessed business man with no heart. Zell purchased the Cubs in December ’07 and is in the process of selling them. The difference is, unlike many other stadiums in the United States, the Cubs do not have revenue coming in from stadium naming rights and Zell isn’t exactly thrilled about that. It’s expected that an extra 5-6 million a year could be had for naming rights to the stadium. He plans on selling the Cubs and the naming rights of the field as two seperate entities. He wants more money and he may sell the naming rights if the Wrigley Company doesn’t start forking over some cash. Fortunately though, the Wrigley Field marquee is a historic landmark protected by the Chicago City Council.
